In a concert environment, between works, the audience gets distracted and noisy. Seeing the conductor raised his arms, alert the orchestra, seeing the downbeat, and hearing the first opening notes quietens them down and gets their attention so that by the time the soloist enters they are listening. If the soloist were to enter first it would be very hard for him/her to send enough visual clues to the hall that he was about to start. This was very noticeable in a recent performance of Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto I attended. Here the soloist does play first and very quietly at that. The work is notoriously difficult to start. There were a number of false starts where he was clearly about to play but some audience noise caused a distraction and he had to “wind down” and “wind up” to start again. The conductor would help since in this case, he was following the soloist rather than the other way round. There are two golden rules for an orchestra: start together and finish together. The public doesn’t give a damn what goes on in between.
